Food Storage Shelf Life

Shelf Reliance put out an incredible blog post that has a comprehensive list of recommended shelf life for a lot of the most common food storage items. We are definitely going to use this as a resource as we put together our food storage. Things with shorter shelf lives will be rotated and used in daily cooking. While we won’t make as much of an effort to use up the things with LONG shelf lives. It’s not THAT bad to have to re-purchase things every 20 years if they go bad. The most important thing is just knowing how to use it should the need arise.

An example of something I personally wont try to use up but will store is white rice. I only eat brown rice, however brown rice has a really short shelf life, I think 6 months- (don't quote me). However white rice has a shelf life of 20 years plus. So when I find a really good sale on white rice, I think I'll stock up on it, and well - leave it in my basement. In case of real emergency I'll eat it, but with it being so cheap and the fact that it lasts so long I wont feel REALLY bad if I don't rotate it.
