If you have a Food Saver with the jar sealer attachments you can place the cereal in a kerr mason jar and use the jar sealer attachment. It will pull ALL the air out and store for years. You can do this with almost any pantry item. Just be careful with powder items. Place them in a bag. The powder could clog up the jar sealer attachment. You can do this with candy bars, too. Cookies, crackers, chocolate chips, cake mixes, brownie mixes..........Just poke a whole in the wrapper and seal.

From someone who has done it, we are still eating Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies from 2005 and they are just fine -- taste just the same to us. Also, I store my marshmallows in an airtight bucket and that "helps" but still not a long-term storage item. Love to know that I can use the corn syrup.

Back to the cereal -- we store a year's supply of cereal (at least) as a comfort food for hubby and kids (I don't care for it that often) and we store them for several years as we rotate them (just can't pass them up when they go on sale for 98 cents or so)..... so, cereal lasts a LONG time as long as it is unopened and in a cool, dark place --

Most of my cereals come with a best before date on the label. If there are nuts in it, I try to use them by the date since the nuts go rancid. If not then they're fine for another couple months. But they're not "long" term food storage, they fit better into 3 month storage that should be rotated regularly.
