My brother does Dutch oven cooking in his backyard! He uses BBQ charcoal briquets. He just has a small patch of dirt that he dug a small hole in and does it that way! It is really tasty! I haven't attempted it myself yet but I will try!
I have a question, do you know what is the best way to store bags of sugar and how long it keeps?

I am with Jodi on the 'long term meal planning'. My consistency has a lot to be desired. My family would be ecstatic if I were more organized with meals. But the days go by so fast and if I am working on my site - well - you know.

One of my goals is to actually get a years worth of wheat and powdered milk. I'm not a member of the LDS church so I haven't been able to go to the cannery. My local cannery in Bridgeton, MO requires you to go with a member of the church and I don't know any members. Buying wheat and powdered milk at regular non cannery prices is expensive when you want to get a years worth. I also really would like to use my dehydrator a lot more and have a better garden this year. I would like to dehydrate and can as much as I am able. We are also going to get chickens so we have a supply of fresh eggs. I know in an emergency something could happen to the chickens, but they sure will be nice to have. I also need to plan better and organize properly. I also need to keep a log of what I have. You girls are so helpful. I appreciate you sharing your endeavors with us. Thanks.

I'll have to come back here and follow your progress on these goals, especially the long-term meal planning and recipes. I think one of the biggest obstacles to people getting their food storage is the idea that you have to store certain things--whether you use those things or not. Having a large store of things you don't eat and don't know how to use is better than nothing, but will ultimately create a lot of waste. The process of learning to store what you eat and eat what you store is essential. I'm especially interested in what you find for cooking without power.

Dehydrating is great! I made apple chips, peach chips and tomato powder this summer when the produce was in season. I also make banana chips very regularly. My 4 year old thinks the fruit chips are candy...shhh...don't tell her the truth! Having a stash of healthy snacks is going to come in SO handy as she recovers...just wish my pantry was in better shape!

i want to share my idea of doing my year supply of meals I look in all my recipes to see which one could be a food storage recipe that I can easly convert using cans , dehydrated food, or things that I can can. then I'll try it to see if my family like it. and I do the same thing until I get 30 dinners 30 breakfast. 30 desserts (I'm almost there) so we will be eating the recipe ones a month you can do as much or less you want(I do have some treats and breads) then I just grab 1 or 2 depends on the ingredients recipes every week, then when I go to buy my grocceries I'll buy those things on the recipe so I know that for sure I have 2 meals ready in my food storage. then when I need it I just simple grab my recipe and the ingr. and done. I like it to do it this way then just buy cans and then to figure it out what to do with it.

thanks for all your good ideas girls I love it!!!!!!!! hope these help

Cooking without power was one area I really felt I needed to get a grasp on. I looked into solar cooking and found some really neat alternatives for cooking with solar. I only tried one solar oven but it did the trick. I feel so much better prepared for an emergency. Here is a link to the one I made. http://www.solarcooking.org/plans/windshield-cooker.htm
