for TN the chart should include TORNADOES as a priority, especially for middle tennessee where our climate is such that we even have tornadoes in winter. this is the number one weather-related disaster we experience, and even though we had 500-year floods this past spring in nashville itself, we have tornadoes here regularly and even our downtown has been hit by an F3 tornado twice. tornado prep includes sheltering in place because often roads are closed due to trees and lines being down, and this means days without access to emergency personnel.

Why doesn't WI have the same conditions as MN? WI gets snow storms just like MN does. WI has had tornado scares.

If hurricane is checked tornado should be checked too. Deaths and injuries from a hurricane are sometimes caused from a tornado striking the home during the storm.

I am currently in South Carolina which has hurricanes and earthquakes. We are in the Air Force, though and our last place was Japan. There it was typhoons and earthquakes, but the biggest “disaster” in everyones memory was a shipping strike. Members of the church were glad to have some storage as the stores emptied until the ships came through. Every time there was a typhoon warning everyone would run to the store and empty the shelves of bottled water. They never could learn that they should just keep it stored.

I'd love to see your blog focus on the situation here with our own Wasatch fault–how can people here live without water for a month before it is restored? What if the quake happens in winter, middle of the night? Check the Deseret news sunday edition for the likely scenarios, especially if you live in a home older than 20 years.

Yeah I agree this list isn't very good. Kentucky isn't listed under Earthquake danger. KY is sitting on part of the New Madrid fault line. It remains very active and is due for a very large quake. In a quake is 1812 it was so big that it made the Mississippi River run backwards and rang church bells in Pennsylvania. So yeah I would consider that a pretty big danger. Also winter storms wasn't checked, KY is notorious for having at least 1 massive ice storm a year. So if I were everyone in oher states. I wouldn't go by this chart, you know the dangers in your own states and should prepare for them accordingly. Great site as a whole though!

Washington isn't listed as a state with tsunami danger. In fact, tsunami evacuation signs and routes are posted all along the coast of Washington and need to planned for.

California – home of no storage, no space, no yard (translates to no garden), no basements, no built-in pantry, and plenty of need for being ready for an earthquake, mudslides, fires, and economic emergencies. Earthquakes are, understandably, on my mind. Maybe I should put all the heavy cans on the lowest shelves…I don't want my children to be hurt by falling cans!

The Great State of Texas isn't marked for winter storms- and rightly so. But even in hot, humid Houston, where I now live, it's best to be prepared for anything. Last week, we had 4 days of freezing weather- lows in the teens and highs still below freezing. Our house wasn't prepared. We had a day without power and a couple of days with no water, because of broken pipes. But our family was prepared. We had our emergency fund to pay the plumber, emergency water and easy to prepare food. This was easier to cope with than the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, but it was another great reminder to always be prepared.

missouri. I find that chart kind of lacking in info. It doesnt have missouri checked for a winter storm but 3 years ago, a big portion of the state where I live was without power for almost 4 weeks(we didnt have it restored at our house, in the middle of a major metro area for3 weeks) due to ice.
