I just moved to the DC area six weeks ago, and began to immediately work on my disaster kits and storage. Just in time! We were hammered with 30" of snow. Nobody can get out to the store and the stores are likely to be depleted for the next few days. Already I'm dipping into my supplies. And the disaster backpack gives me great piece of mind. If the power goes out, I can take the pack with me to a shelter.

So, for those thinking of doing food storage but are putting it off, don't put it off any longer! You don't need to wait until you can figure out super-duper shelves and special water drums. Even if you put a $2 case of Ramen noodles, a few canned veggies and a couple gallons of water in a box, it's a start. You never know what can happen or when. You can concentrate on longer-term containers later.

I'll admit, I chuckled when I read "crowbar." My husband is an IT analyst and all I could picture him using the crowbar for was smashing some $%&^@! server that had crashed or prying open a large commercial printer that was jammed.

My husband drives a vending truck here in Minnesota (snow!). I've been thinking of making him a car/truck kit, because his work doesn't give them phones or walky-talkies.
