“Budget-Friendly” 12 Days of Food Storage Christmas

Just For Fun
Last year someone did a 12 Days of Christmas for our family for the 12 days leading up to Christmas Eve. We would find a surprise gift on our porch that was something fun for the kids or an inexpensive gift with a nice message. It's always fun to see what the surprise will be the next day! If you have family, friends, or neighbors who you have been wanting to introduce to the world of preparedness, this could be a fun way to do it. We've put together 12 days of free or inexpensive (under $1) gifts that follow along our 10 babysteps to help someone get started and hopefully peak their curiosity to learn even more. Feel free to adapt this to meet your needs. You can do…

Food Storage Made Easy Birthday Bash

Just For Fun
6 years ago, we were two young moms who started a blog to help us organize our thoughts on building our food storage and being prepared for ... something. We didn't know what, but we knew we needed to do it. We posted a few things but didn't want to share it with anyone until there were more than just a few posts on there :) We officially launched July 1st, 2008 but wrote for most of June so we want to celebrate out 6 year blogiversary this month with all of you! Make sure to scroll down and see our special eBook sale that only happens twice a year! While we have learned a lot over the last 6 years, we still have so much we want to figure…

PREPAREDNESS SPRING CLEANING ZONES

Just For Fun, Preparing Your Space
Spring is in the air... and with that comes spring cleaning. I admit I buy into the spring cleaning frenzy. I love clearing things out of my house. Recycling, de-cluttering, donating things, and throwing things out makes me happy. Today I wanted to talk about Food Storage and Emergency Preparedness Spring cleaning! A few Saturdays ago something happened in our schedule that never happens. We had NOTHING scheduled. Well I got giddy with excitement, pulled out some post-it- notes, and started on a rampage. I wrote down every project I wanted done. I got started working through the projects on my post-it-notes one by one. I placed all of them on my fridge and as I completed a task I pulled the note off. I still have a few more…

Get Your Kids Involved!

Just For Fun
Some of the best memories from my childhood are from when I was in the kitchen helping my mom, or out in the garden with my grandpa. I loved helping, and felt a sense of pride in the work I would do. Now that I am a mom, I try to remember those memories as I'm getting dinner ready and think "clearing the kids out" would be easier. We recently did a podcast on how "having no time" is one of the reasons for not building a food storage. One of the things we recommended for this problem, is to get your kids involved and helping so that food storage projects can become family activities. This picture is of me and my dear Grandpa up in Northern Quebec twenty something…

Answers to your Food Storage questions? Yes please!

Just For Fun
We've LOVED our Facebook page, and especially loved getting to know you better there. We often tell people the best part about our Facebook page is how helpful you ALL are to EACH OTHER. Well if you're on Facebook, you know that things never stay the same on there. A few weeks ago with the new "Timeline" format it has become harder for you to see each other's posts on our wall. What used to be an easy way to post a question and get answers from each other, now gets hidden in the right hand corner. We don't LOVE THAT! Well we've come up with a wee bit of a solution. You may have noticed sometimes we'll post as our own status questions from readers. These are questions we…

Harry Potter, the beach, Disney World, and … WHEAT?

Just For Fun, Wheat
I have been on vacation this week. Julie is wonderful for holding down the fort while I've been away (although it would have been more fun if she were here with me!) Here are a few highlights of my trip: Butterbeer in Hogsmeade Bikini Beach Babe A Few of My Favorite Things A "Wheatie" Plane Ride My daughter and I sat by a really nice Grandpa on our flight to Florida. He gave his extra cookies to her, and she let him play "Temple Run" on our iPad. I had a nice chat with him, and during our conversation I discovered that he owns a little farm in Minnesota. I told him about my Backyard Chickens and asked him what he farmed. When he told me he grew wheat I…

Food Storage and Kids

Just For Fun
For those of you with small (or big) children you know that "getting things done" can be kind of tricky. Each day you wake up with really GREAT intentions, then regular (wonderful) life gets in the way and you promise yourself, tomorrow you'll be more productive. When it comes to Food Storage, we realized if we always waited until nap time, school time, or any other "kidless" time we would never get around to planning, buying and using our Food Storage. So we decided we would have a mental shift. Instead of waiting until we had free time, we started involving our kids more in our Food Storage adventures. We talk about how this is one of the strategies of getting Food Storage done in our pep talk found here.…
