Powerless Cooking Adventures

Powerless Cooking Adventures
Summertime is the PERFECT opportunity to practice your powerless cooking skills. In fact, we even shared a post with 10 Ways to Practice Powerless Cooking This Summer several years ago. We always like to come up with fun events to incentivize force ourselves to actually practice what we preach. So this summer we are bringing back our Powerless Cooking Adventures but with an added community aspect to it which we are totally excited about! Here's how the adventures will work: We commit to cooking AT LEAST once a week using one of our powerless cooking options which we will list below. We will share our adventures via all our social media channels so make sure you are subscribed wherever you prefer to follow us: - Instagram - Facebook page - YouTube YOU can…

Making Potato Salad in a Sun Oven

Powerless Cooking Adventures
Last week we hosted a Sun Oven Cooking Essentials Webinar (you can still access the free class through Wednesday, May 4th at midnight). Paul Munsen, president of Sun Ovens International always shares so many great tips on actually USING your Sun Oven to save time and money in the kitchen and I learn something new every time I listen to him speak. This class was no different. I got it in my head that I really wanted to try the hard-boiled egg trick and Sunday dinner was a perfect opportunity. I somehow ended up hosting my entire family for a dinner and there were 24 people coming to my house for a barbecue. I was scrambling to make a bunch of side dishes and decided this would be a great…

Indoor Powerless Cooking – Butane Stoves

Powerless Cooking, Powerless Cooking Adventures
We did a powerless cooking "class" a while back and over the summer we really practiced using a lot of the different options for powerless cooking. The only problem was that we never really came up with a good solution for INDOOR powerless cooking. While it is still possible to cook outdoors in the middle of the winter, I can't say that I'd be super thrilled to do it for any extended period. We've been looking into what options are available for cooking indoors and how you would store the fuel for those options. Some of things things we've been reading about are wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, alcohol stoves, butane stoves, and also just getting a generator that will allow you to use some regular electric cooking tools.   Today I…

Wonder Box Oven: TAKE 1

Powerless Cooking Adventures
It's been awhile since we've shared with you some of our summer powerless cooking adventures. We've been busy enjoying the weather, chasing our kids around, and visiting at 2 family reunions. Even though we've been busy, we've really enjoyed using our powerless cooking tools that we talked about in our powerless cooking class. Today we're going to show you Julie's first attempt at using the Wonderbox oven. If you follow our blog regularly, you'll know Julie is the one who doesn't really follow recipes. Well, turns out she should have on this one. The rice turned out ok - however she should have boiled the water longer and maybe cooked the rice for less time. Don't be fooled by her initial shout for joy. She likes to wing things, and…

Julie’s Turn at the Sun Oven … Then we’re done (sort of)

Grains, Powerless Cooking, Powerless Cooking Adventures, Wheat
We know we've been covering Powerless Cooking a LOT the past few weeks. It's a major goal of ours to become better at this stuff... but We DO remember what it was like to find all these tools COMPLETELY overwhelming. So from now on, we'll post most of our weekly attempts at cooking a meal without power on our Summer Adventures page. You may want to bookmark that page, or subscribe to our new YouTube channel to get immediate access to the videos (more on our YouTube channel next week). We'll still mention it on facebook and here and there on the blog, but we'll be back to a variety of the posts next week. Since Jodi tried her Sun Oven with rice last week, I worked up the courage…

How NOT to ruin your rice (aka Jodi’s First Powerless Cooking Adventure)

You may or may not remember that I used to have a little bit of a rice problem. I could NOT get it to cook right without using a rice cooker. Julie tried to teach me here, but I still failed until I got a pressure cooker. Oh how I love my pressure cooker! Well the problem with both my rice cooker AND my pressure cooker is they are ELECTRIC. So ... for my FIRST powerless cooking adventure this summer I decided to tackle my rice problem. Watch my little video below, and then scroll down to learn more about our Sun Oven SALE that ends June 21st and our exciting SUN OVEN GIVEAWAY. It's hard to believe, but 3 years have passed since we started this blog. When we first started, the thought of powerless cooking paralyzed us. We felt so overwhelmed by gathering a food storage, we couldn't face figuring out how to cook the foods without power too! We decided we would break the process of actually building our storage down into BabySteps, and THEN deal with powerless cooking later. Well this year is the year we are really focusing on powerless cooking. If you've followed along, you know it's one of our goals for 2011. We KNOW from our 7 day challenge that trying these things out and practicing them is SO valuable. So this summer we're going to try cooking without power! We hope you'll join us in this…
