Winterize Your Vegetable Gardens
5 Tips for a Better Garden Next Spring

If you were growing a garden this summer, check out these five tips for some ideas on how to plan/prepare NOW for better results next year!

1. Dig up ALL your old plants
Don't let yourself get caught by winter before you have eliminated all your plants. You may get a number of "surprise" plants popping up in places that were NOT in your garden plans!

2. Eliminate weeds
Rather then letting weeds sit all winter and propegate in the spring, ELIMINATE them! You can use a commercial weed killer since you won't be eating of the garden until at least spring. If you don't like chemicals, remove weeds by hand,

3. Add in additional compost/dirt
If you use raised garden beds this is especially important. Over time your soil will get compacted. Fill up beds with fresh compost each year and your veggies will love the nutrients. In traditional garden beds till compost in to existing soil.

4. Plant over-wintering veggies
Depending on where you live you may be able to plant some vegetables that will develop over the winter and give you an early spring crop. Here in Utah we can plant garlic over the winter and it works great!

5. Review your results and make a plan
Evaluate the goods and bads of your garden this year. Make next year's garden plan when all of your results are fresh in your head. Think about what you had too much of, not enough of, what grew well, what varieties you liked and didn't like, etc. Don't forget to rotate where you place the same vegetables each year too!
