When just getting started with food storage, it is overwhelming to think of what to do in a true powerless emergency situation. I’ve also heard bad things about Humless Generators

We recently watched a demo of the Sentinel powering a microwave and it was AWESOME! We are going to ask them about the issue with the battery not fully recharging after several uses. But everything we’ve seen so far has been very positive.

Please, I’m not trying to be rude or contentious, but I was close to ordering this product so I did some research and found numerous troubling reports of batteries failing to charge or hold their charge. I noticed you removed my comment on this, but if you don’t thouroughly address it, you are going to possibly leave a lot of people in an awful predicament. It is better to courageously face the truth now then count on claims that appear to be unfounded.

Sherrylou,
Thanks for your comment and concern. It appears as though your first comment was left on a different page. Your original comment was left on our top picks for emergency prep products page, not this humless page. We didn’t delete it, and infact replied there. You can see the reply posted below where you originally posted the comment: ( this was the page it was posted on: http://foodstoragemadeeasy.net/2012/03/24/top-picks-for-emergency-prep-products/ ):
Sherrylou, we met with the owners of Humless at an expo and were very impressed with what we learned about this product. We also know that Shelf Reliance recently started selling them and they do extensive testing before they offer a product. It was able to power an industrial fridge in their break room with no problems. I wonder if the people with the bad reviews might have had faulty units? I’m sure that Humless would do everything possible to make sure they were functioning as promised and would replace a unit that wasn’t working properly.
We never delete comments, unless they are spam or rude, and your comment was very respectful and genuine. We appreciate the feedback and will follow up with this, but we’ve heard all good things. Perhaps you could email us the information you found.
Thanks for your concern

I am wondering if you can replace the 10 year battery and how much it would cost (in today’s terms).

We got this reply from our rep when we asked them this question : ” **Yes we will offer this service, but at this time I do not have pricing, I should have the pricing within the next month “

Is there any way to get an idea how long this would run? For example, if the generator were fully charged, and I ran my refridgerator off it with a 1200w startup and 150w continuous, how long would the charge last?
Also, can extra batteries be purchased?

This is the reply we got from our rep: The generator stores 600 watt hours if you use the 12 V DC discharge if you use the inverter you will get 510 Watt hours due to the 15% loss fact when transforming DC to AC current. If I had a 10 watt LED light bulb I would take the wattage ( 10 Watts) and divide it into the Watt hours for my unit, if I was using the light bulb on the AC side it would run for 510 divided by 10 equals 51 hours. Now for a fridge or freezer you will need to calculate how long out of the hour your compressor runs, the best way to do this is to purchase a watt Ez meter from home depot and connect it to your fridge and find out what your standing power consumption ( the power you use for the fridge to run without the compressor being engaged) is and what your running power consumption ( the power you use when your compressor is running) is and monitor that for one hour so that you can determine exactly how much wattage you use per hour. A general rule of thumb with a full refrigerator is that your compressor will run for fifteen minutes out of the hour.

I see it says it can be charged by a hand crank (which I would turn into a foot pedal). How long would that take, and where could an appropriate crank be purchased? Thanks!

I wonder how log you can run it between charges on a 1000watt load?

I’m wondering if this would replace a gas generator to live off grid?
http://foodstoragemadeeasy.net Jodi and Julie
Yes! The Sentinal model is strong enough to run any of your household appliances. The beauty of it is that you would not need to store gas. That is why we are so excited about them!

To be perfectly honest about this product replacing a gas generator, it will but with limitations. As long as the sun is shining and you’re not trying to run everything at the same time this unit should allow you to live off grid. I have a similar unit and it is great as long as it’s sunny. You must be very frugal with energy use at night and during times of extended cloudy times. All that said, I’d take this over a noisy fume producing gas generator. Conserve, then energize!
