  1. Allow me to suggest that you check out a video demonstrating an excellent pail for storing grain, other food, or other items to keep dry.

  2. I have no affiliation with this company, but my friend orders food from them and they have some great grains, beans, everything you mention here except real milk (they have what they call better than milk, etc). I think it is a real winner.

  3. Not to be critical here, but I have to take exception to your recommendation of the Wondermill grain mill. Unless I am mistaken, it has no means of manual operation which means that it is dependent on the availability of electricity in order to provide usable food for you.
Here’s were you run into the problem. You see, if times are so dire that you have to depend on your stored food to stay fed, then that means the people who run the utilities like electricity and water will themselves have to devote their time to finding food and gas, and will not be reporting to work. You need a non-electric solution to all your needs. For this I recommend the Country Living Grain Mill: http://countrylivinggrainmills.com/
Get a repair kit and a spare set of grinding wheels and you can stay feed for years to come.

  4. Opsec, Thanks for your comments, but this is an issue we have considered long and hard. As noted on our grains page, we recommend having a basic hand grinder in case of a true emergency with no power (but you’d still have an issue with baking it anyway). Our philosophy is to store what you eat and eat what you store. To hand grind wheat to use on a regular basis is not feasible to us. We LOVE the Wondermill grinder for learning how to use our wheat easily and cleanly and getting our family used to it (which we feel is VERY important). Also, a lot of times food storage will be needed due to economic trouble where you would still have access to electricity but just not have enough money for food.

Also the Country Living mill is almost double the cost of the Wondermill and we don’t want wheat grinders to be a hang up for people and prevent them from getting started on their food storage.

For the purposes of most of the readers of our blog we still stand by our recommendation of the Wondermill along with an inexpensive hand grinder until they figure out an alternative power source.
