Welcome to DAY 19 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we are going to inventory one aspects of our preps … our emergency fuels! Calculate what you have, how long it will last you, and make a plan for purchasing anything additional that you may need.
Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

It doesn’t matter if you have a basement full of food if you don’t have any way to actually COOK your foods! Emergency fuels are a pretty big topic to cover but since we are just doing 15 minute projects this week we are only going to focus on doing an inventory of what we currently have.
Several years ago we did a powerless cooking class and made this little handout on emergency cooking fuels. You can use it to learn a little bit more about how to store them, and also to help you calculate how long your fuel supply will last. One fuel that doesn’t usually make it onto lists of fuels to “store” is the SUN. If you have a way to cook using solar power you are going to be MUCH better off in an emergency. I have an All-American Sun Oven that is my primary cooking tool of choice since it requires no actual fuel. However, it rains A LOT where I live so I have several back-up fuels and tools available for days that the sun isn’t out.
Today I want you to think about the tools you have for cooking and what fuels are needed to cook with them. Inventory how much you have of each fuel and how many meals you think you could cook with what you have stored. Ideally you would want to have a year supply of fuel on hand, especially if you are trying to have a year supply of food as well.
Share Your Results
What is your primary method of fuel storage? I’d love to see pics of how you are storing them and what you have on hand. Here are some ways you can share:
Instagram: Use #15minuteprep and tag @jodi_foodstoragemadeeasy on any post or story you do featuring your project. You can follow the hashtag to see everyone’s projects and if you tag me I will repost in my stories throughout the day (if your account is public).
Facebook: Comment on the PINNED posts in my Facebook Group (If you are not a member yet I will try to get you added within 24 hours so you can play along). The most recent day should show up at the top and you can scroll to the right to see past days. I will try to share some of these to Facebook stories as well (no names will be used, don’t worry!)
Text me: If you are not already signed up to get the daily challenges via text just text 15minuteprep to 717-788-3663. You can always reply to the daily text with your “report” so I can check in on you.
