Welcome to week two of our Summer Inventory Challenge. If you haven’t already signed up to participate you can learn more and sign up at this link.
This week we are focusing on Shelves and Water Storage and doing an inventory of all our supplies. Remember each challenge will walk you through these three questions:
- What do you want to have?
- What do you already have?
- What do you still need to get?
Introduction Video
What Do You Want to Have?
For a general overview of this weeks topics, please check out the Babystep 1: Shelves page and the Babystep 2: Water page. These pages are a good starting point for the basics of what you SHOULD be storing. However, it’s always important to consider YOUR family’s individual circumstances and what will work best for you and your space.
One big component of SHELVING when you already have an established food storage is really considering the organizational aspect. Take some time this week to think about your storage spaces. Can you be more organized? Are you using your space wisely? I have opted to split my storage into several different areas of my home/garage in my new house so it takes some time to figure out exactly what will go where.
When considering water storage remember you need to think shorter term AND longer term. Have enough on hand to get you through a few days, but have a plan in place for how to access and purify more water if there is a longer-term disaster situation.

What Do You Already Have?
Most people know what shelving and water storage containers they already have. So your big challenge for this week is to actually go and FILL your water containers. We have been attacking our garage this summer since it is about the last thing left to do in our move so we are FINALLY getting to a point where we can get our water tower set up. I always get asked about this set up. I got mine from Titan Ready USA. I’ll share some more details on them later this week on Facebook and Instagram. I have no excuse for the WaterBricks except that I just don’t know exactly where I want to put them so I didn’t fill them up yet. THESE WILL BE FILLED THIS WEEK!!!
What Do You Still Need to Get?
Cross reference your list of what you want with what you already have and make a shopping list of supplies needed. I am pretty set for having the right shelving and water storage containers but there are a few bonus items I am planning to pick up. I have more bathrooms in my new house so I want to grab a few more waterbobs for the additional tubs. I also am going to be researching methods of rainwater collection since it rains A LOT in Pennsylvania so I really want to take advantage of that in an emergency … especially since I need to have good drinking water for so many more people!
