Welcome to the 2024 7 Day Challenge. For 7 days, we are testing our Emergency Preparedness and Food Storage Plans. Each day will bring about a NEW mini challenge that will focus on a different aspect of our preparedness plans.
In order to receive each day’s emergency scenario in your email please sign up for the 7 Day Challenge email list or subscribe via text by texting 7daychallenge to 717-788-3663.
REMEMBER: To get the most out of the challenge, don’t be too literal about the scenarios. Modify them to fit YOUR family’s situation. Also, try to actually DO each day’s challenge. Don’t try to justify why you wouldn’t “need” to. The point is to PRACTICE our skills!
DAY 6: First Aid
Having first aid supplies on hand can be critical for your survival in a short term OR long term emergency situation. Medications often have expiration dates or are not easily accessible so it’s a good idea to have items on hand with long shelf lives that can be used to make medical salves, ointments, etc.
POSSIBLE SCENARIOS:
- Antiseptic Salve (for cuts and scrapes)
- Burn Salve (for burns and sunburns)
- Antifungal Salve (for rashes or fungal infections)
- Pain-Relief Balm (for sore muscles or joint pain)
- Anti-Itch Salve (for bug bites and poison ivy)
- Herbal Tinctures (for calming or pain-relieving purposes)
- Natural Disinfectants (herbal-infused alcohol solutions for cleaning wounds)
- Soothing Compresses (for inflammation or bruising)
You can research how to make all of these different balms and salves in natural medicine books, websites, etc. These are all able to be made with items that are easy to store and have a long shelf life. Click here for a good overview post of many medicines you can make at home.
MINI CHALLENGE: Make a homemade burn cream
Remember the mini challenge can be done at any time during the day that fits your schedule. Take some time to actually DO the task and don’t just “think” your way through it.
🔥 Practice making a homemade burn cream using the following recipe:
Mix 2 ounces of honey, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, and 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Put in a small jar and use as needed.

Inventory the resources you currently have to prepare your family for medical emergencies. Here are a few questions to ask yourself :
- First Aid: Do you have a fully-stocked first aid kit? Do you need to replenish any supplies? What advanced medications do you have? Do you have a plan for having extras of prescription medications? Do you have the raw ingredients on hand to make homemade medicines should the need arise? Do you have hard copies of books or instruction manuals to perform basic first aid should you need be able to access the internet? Are you CPR certified? (view some basic CPR and first aid tips)
PLAN:
Print out the worksheets below and add items you need to do, to learn, and to buy as you find holes in your preparedness plans throughout the week. Print multiple sheets as needed. These worksheets will become your road map for improving your preps over the next few months.
I will also be posting a lot on instagram (@jodi_foodstoragemadeeasy) over the next few days as I go through the challenges on my own. Come join the fun there and use hash tag #fsme7daychallenge if you are sharing your own adventures as well.
