Welcome to DAY 3 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we are going to locate our flashlights and candles and put them somewhere safe!
Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

Powerless Emergencies
When the power goes out the first thing we always do is look for lights. If your family is anything like mine … your flashlights are never in the place you left them and almost always out of batteries.
For today’s project I want you to see how many flashlights and candles you can locate in your home. I used to think it would be smart to keep one beside each person’s bed but I realized everyone has a cell phone they can use for a shorter term problem. But if we need to light up the room or our phones die or we need to conserve battery having a good stockpile of alternative light is still important!
Today’s Project:
- Step 1: Find your flashlights and candles (how many can you locate?)
- Step 2: Tape batteries to each flashlight so you know you have spares when the need arises
- Step 3: Put some matches or lighters near the candles
- Step 4: HIDE THEM IN A SAFE PLACE (don’t be tempted to spread them around the house)
Can you do this in fifteen minutes? If you need to buy a few flashlights it might take a bit longer!
Other Lighting Options:
Goal Zero Lanterns: These are favorites with my kiddos whenever the power goes out. They immediately run and grab them from my storage area. Funny enough, they don’t try to snatch them any other time so I guess I’m lucky there.
Hand Crank Flashlights: I have a few of these in my 72 hour kits but I don’t think it hurt to have a few in my secret stash in case of a longer term power outage where you might run out of batteries. Plus a lot of times they have other features like a radio which nobody really has at home any more!
