Welcome to DAY 17 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today’s project is to put together or update your car emergency kits. With fall weather on its way it’s a perfect time for it!
Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

It’s always a good idea to have some basic supplies in your vehicle for whatever emergency situation may arise. It could be as simple as a dead battery or as intense as a major accident leaving you stranded in bad weather for several days.
If you don’t have any emergency supplies in your car yet, here is a list of items that you may want to consider including, modify as necessary to meet your needs. If you already have a kit, you can replenish or rotate supplies and see if there is anything on this list that you are missing.
- Water (mylar pouches or cardboard boxes are best for extreme temperatures)
- 72 hour kit food, high calorie meal bars, freeze-dried meals, other snacks
- Cash ($20-30 in small bills and include some change)
- Mommy Emergency Kit if you have small children
- Emergency blankets/hand warmers (and/or an old spare comforter)
- Jumper cables
- Car shovel/pick
- Pocket knife or multi-tool
- First aid kit
- Radio (hand crank or battery operated)
- Flashlight (hand crank or battery operated)
- Package of batteries (for flashlight and radio)
- Toilet paper roll
- Spare clothes/walking shoes for all family members
- Coffee can heater
Make sure you have each of your vehicles well-equipped. If you don’t have some of the supplies, it may take a little longer than 15 minutes so feel free to break this project up over several days if needed.
Share Your Results
I’d love to see your car kits once you have them put together. Here are some ways you can share:
Instagram: Use #15minuteprep and tag @jodi_foodstoragemadeeasy on any post or story you do featuring your project. You can follow the hashtag to see everyone’s projects and if you tag me I will repost in my stories throughout the day (if your account is public).
Facebook: Comment on the PINNED posts in my Facebook Group (If you are not a member yet I will try to get you added within 24 hours so you can play along). The most recent day should show up at the top and you can scroll to the right to see past days. I will try to share some of these to Facebook stories as well (no names will be used, don’t worry!)
Text me: If you are not already signed up to get the daily challenges via text just text 15minuteprep to 717-788-3663. You can always reply to the daily text with your “report” so I can check in on you.
