7 Great Ways to Use Wheat WITHOUT a Wheat Grinder!

If you have read our blog for very long, you have often heard and seen us talk about how much we LOVE our WonderMill Wheat Grinders. We were lucky enough to get ours fairly early on in our food storage adventures, but we confess that we let NOT having a grinder really stand in the way of getting started with our food storage. Please learn from our mistake, buy a little bit of wheat, and try these 7 great ideas for using your wheat WITHOUT a wheat grinder!


wheat-kernel-2501. Thermos Wheat
Recipe from author Rita Bingham

Bring 1 c. of wheat kernels, 2 c. water, and 1 t. salt to a boil in a medium saucepan. Pour into a heated stainless steel or glass-lined thermos bottle. Secure cap. Place bottle on side. In the morning, pour off any additional water, add butter and honey, and serve hot.


wheat-berries12. Wheat Berries
Add some of your plain dry wheat kernels to a pot of water. Bring it to a boil and cook for a few minutes. Then let simmer for about 45 minutes. Drain the wheat berries and stick them in a tupperware container in the fridge. These are delicious to add to yogurt or to use to replace some meat in recipes. You can also use it in place of brown rice in a lot of recipes.


poppedwheat3. Popped Wheat
Take 1 cup of your cooked wheat berries (see above) and add to a frying pan of pot with two tablespoons of oil in it. Cover with a lid and cook over a hot stove shaking the pan while it cooks. After about 4-5 minutes the kernels will be nice and toasted. Put the popped wheat on a paper towel to get the extra oil off, and sprinkle with your choice of seasonings. Try it with salt, seasoned salt, garlic, barbecue salt, onion salt, cinnamon and sugar or any combination you desire. These are delicious on salads as a topping, mixed with trail mix, or as toppings for a desserts or just as a healthy snack.


wheatgrass4. Wheat Grass
Most people have heard how healthy wheat grass is for you, but most people DON’T know that you can make your own wheat grass at home for free with just a little bit of your food storage wheat. Check out this step by step tutorial on How to Grow Wheat Grass if you want to try it yourself! It looks so easy. Then you can snip bits off and add them to your fruit smoothies, or if you have a juicer you can use them in other healthy juice drinks.


cracked-wheat5. Cracked Wheat
You can crack wheat in a blender or a coffee grinder. To do it in a blender you simply put in about 1/4-1/3 cups of wheat and pulse it until it looks like little cracked kernels. These kernels will cook much faster than regular wheat, and cook up in the same way that you cook rice on the stove or in the microwave. You can use cracked wheat to make hot cereal, add it into bread, or cook it up and use as a meat filler. For more info in cracked wheat visit this post at Everyday Food Storage.


wheat-sprouts6. Wheat Sprouts
Making wheat sprouts is a different method than making wheat grass. You can sprout wheat just like any other vegetable seeds, legumes, or other grains. Make sure to review our tutorial on how to grow sprouts. Most people like wheat sprouts to be very small, just barely sprouted. These are delicious to throw on salads or to add into your whole wheat bread for a little extra texture and flavor.


7. Blender Wheat Flour
If you are cooking a recipe for something like pancakes or waffles, you can EASILY use your whole wheat kernels, mix the whole recipe in your blender, and pour it straight from there onto a griddle or waffle-maker. Just make sure to add the liquid for your recipe into the blender, then add in your wheat kernels and blend for about 5 minutes. Then add the rest of the ingredients. Please note: Don’t go trying all of these ideas all at once! If you add TOO MUCH wheat into your diet TOO FAST it can give you digestion problems, and we promise you don’t want to have that ;)

    When you try blender wheat flour you may want soak the wheat overnight in an ancidic water (water with lemon juice, vinegar or whey) or buttermilk so that the grains are easier to digest and you can absorb the nutrients that whole grain has to offer.

      I tried this suggestion for Sunday break fast, and the pancakes turned out MUCH better! Using the initial recipe from this site, I still had large-ish chunks of wheat kernels that did not cook very well, and the pancakes were a little gritty. By soaking them in buttermilk (made with powder) overnight, the kernels softened wonderfully. It stall had a good texture, without being crunchy, Thanks, Tamara!

    as a sweet side dish…put 1.5 cup wheat in a rice cooker  plus 1 can sweetened condensed milk…let it go until milk is soaked up :)

    I bought my wheat about 4 months ago because of this article, and I still do not have a grinder. Even so, wheat has become a staple in our diet in the form of blender pancakes on Sunday mornings and cracked wheat extending our meat. I cook it up in beef broth and call it “poor man’s TVP’! Hubby is going to be using cracked wheat in bread soon, and I have been taking wheat berry salads to work. Thanks so much for this valuable step in our food storage, it has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for us!

    Maybe I should already know this….but, why do I have to have wheat kernels in my storage?  Can’t I just store packages of wheat flour? ☺

      The wheat kernels last much longer than flour. They last up to 30
      years, where as ground flour can go bad fairly quickly. That’s why
      most people store kernels. Hope that helps :)

        I agree with Jodi.  The freshness and protein levels quickly drop in freshly ground flour.  The natural oils present in the wheat can go rancid quickly.  That is why it is best to use freshly ground flour right away or store it in your freezer for up to six months.

    Wheat is really something, isn’t it? It’s a pretty common item, but it’s very abundant and versatile. People use it all over the world, and this list is just some of the amazing things that wheat could be used for. And it’s no wonder that wheat is bought and sold everyday. Smaller countries with large populations must buy from overseas, with the exporters being financed in order for it to be traded internationally.

    I just have a regular Oster Blender. Doesn't putting straight wheat in your blender wear it out super fast? I was encouraged by these recipes because I'd like to just use a blender but didn't want to wreck it in the process….thanks for all the cool tips and recipes!

    I have a “magic bullet” blender – using the spice mill attachment I can turn whole wheat into flour… works with a coffee grinder too…. but it takes a while to get a large enough batch to make something big.

    For #2 a crockpot can also be used and the wheat cooked longer. I use wheat:water 1:3. Cookin’ With Wheat by Pam Crockett has a lot of good recipes for cooked wheat berries. For #7 I’ve heard to use frozen berries because of the high temp when using a blender.
    It would be great to include a link in the article where people can purchase a #10 can of wheat with Emergency Essentials or any of the retailers that sell #10 cans individually to get started with it. Most groceries don’t carry wheat and many may not shop at a health food store. I wish I had known about purchasing a smaller can when I was first looking to use it. :)

    Great ideas…just make sure your blender is powerful enough to grind the wheat for the wheat blender pancakes. My neighbor ruined hers this way.

    I've been cooking wheat in a rice cooker– either just with water or with broth. Usually (if I remember…) I let it soak a few hours before turning it on.

    I just got some wheat from the cannery and my dh said what are we going to do with that, we don't have a wheat grinder, now I can give him several, although I am asking for a wheat grinder for Christmas! Thanks for the article
