Zesty Wheat Berry Black Bean Chili

Bean Recipes, Recipes, Wheat Recipes
I've been transitioning to a vegetarian diet over the past few months and have discovered that most food storage recipes are fabulous for this new way of eating. I love that I can try new recipes and know that they fit in with the way I want to eat right now, as well as are full of ingredients that I have in my long term food storage. I made this Zesty Wheat Berry Black Bean Chili using my Instant Pot and it turned out amazing, wasn't too time consuming and is fairly inexpensive with all the food storage substitutions I made! Win-win-win. Zesty Wheat Berry Black Bean Chili Ingredients: 2 T. olive oil 1/2 c. freeze-dried chopped onions 1/2 c. freeze-dried red bell peppers 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tsp.…

Patriotic Blender Wheat Waffles

Fruit Recipes, Recipes, Wheat Recipes
My kids LOVE when I "celebrate" holidays by making festive foods. I don't always love throwing food color into everything so I'm trying to do better at using natural foods to liven things up. I was going to make some patriotic blender wheat pancakes for dinner but the kids insisted on waffles instead so I decided to give it a try! Here's a little video showing my experiment :) Patriotic Blender Wheat Waffle Recipe Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups wheat kernels 1 2/3 cups milk (can use powdered milk equivalent) 2 T. sugar 1 T. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 medium banana (mashed) 6 T. vegetable oil 2 large eggs (can use powdered egg equivalent) Optional Ingredients: 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips 2 cups freeze-dried strawberries 1 cup freeze-dried blueberries…

How to Make Ezekiel Bread

Legume Recipes, Recipes, Wheat Recipes
Several years ago Julie posted about an Ezekiel Bread Recipe that one of our readers shared on Facebook and asked someone to try for her since she didn't have a wheat grinder. I recently started a new eating plan and one of the recommended foods for my carbohydrates is Ezekiel Bread. I knew I needed to finally try this recipe for myself as it makes way more sense to rotate through my grains and legumes as opposed to buying this expensive bread from the store. I made a few tweaks to the original recipe that I was very happy with! Some of Julie's complaints were that the dough was really liquidy/sticky and that the bread was pretty crumbly when cooked. I researched some other Ezekiel Bread recipes and there are…

Sourdough 101: Part 1 of 2

Wheat Recipes
Alright, today I'm going to be sharing something with you that I'm still learning about myself. I started learning about sourdough starters and sourdough bread last week. I was sharing my experiments with you all on Facebook and had a lot of requests to post recipes and instructions. Can I just say - I'M TOTALLY NEW AT THIS, and hesitant to even share because it's kind of like the blind leading the blind here... but I'll just tell you what I learned. That is actually how we started our blog in the first place, so it feels familiar to be totally clueless over here! Today I'm going to share some research, and basic information on sourdough and sourdough starters. Then next week I'll share the recipe for the bread I…

Homemade Whole Wheat “Rhodes” Rolls

Wheat Recipes
Since having baby number 3, I've been searching for ways to get more out of my cooking time. I am dabbling a little in freezer meals, cooking in bulk, and preparing foods that will give me multiple meals. I figure if I'm going to get the kitchen dirty, I may as well get more out of it. I still have a lot to learn, but this last week I had a little success that I thought I would share with you all. A few months ago we posted our FAVORITE bread recipe. I use this recipe for bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, and so much more. Well, I was making bread and some odd shaped pizzas last week and had a random amount of dough left. It wasn't big enough…

Top Twelve Questions About MAKING BREAD

Wheat Recipes
After our post last week where we shared THE BEST WHEAT BREAD RECIPE EVER we got a slew of questions in blog comments, on facebook, and in our email inbox. We decided to address those questions in a separate post so that everyone can see all the answers. Without further ado, here are the top twelve questions we received: Q. Do I have to use a stand mixer to make this bread? A. NO! During our annual 7 Day Challenge we had a challenge where we had to make bread using NO ELECTRICITY at all. I made this same recipe and ground it by hand, kneading it by hand (yes my kneading needs work), and cooked it in a Sun Oven and cardboard box oven. It wasn't easy but it…

Best Wheat Bread Recipe – Yup We Said BEST!

It is healthy, delicous, and helps you to use your Food Storage. A couple years ago, we found this recipe and have never looked back! One time Julie told her husband's best friend (who loves this bread) that she was going to try a different recipe. He got visibly upset, a little panicked, and said: "Don't fix what ain't broke!" The recipe she was wanting to try was actually just a variation of THIS recipe using a bunch of other grains... NOT another whole wheat recipe...don't worry! This recipe comes from the Deals to Meals blog. Their blog is one of…

Homemade Whole Wheat Tortillas (Using a tortilla press and cooker)

Cooking From Scratch, Recipes, Wheat, Wheat Recipes
I've been making homemade whole wheat tortillas for awhile now by hand. A friend of mine called me a couple weeks ago and said she wanted to make a lot of them for lunches and snacks and wanted to know some of my tricks for making and storing them in bulk. When she asked me this, I had to confess I only really make them for this one recipe because rolling them out is actually kind of annoying. It's totally doable, and I did a post about it awhile back, but making them by hand takes enough time that I shy away from it. Well then, we were asked to come to a food storage fair where we needed to bring samples for 150+ people. The recipe we made called…

Making Pizza in a BLENDER???

Cooking From Scratch, Recommended Products, Wheat Recipes
For those of you who follow or blog or our Facebook page, you will know that Julie is very into the whole "healthy food storage" thing and I tend to have a weakness for yummy treats. (Julie does admit her addiction to cadbury mini eggs though). Well I have been trying to make small steps to healthier eating and one thing I'm doing pretty well at is making my green smoothies almost every day. They are yummy and easy and it makes me feel good that I'm getting tons of fruits and veggies into my diet. If this is something that is important to you, you may have already bought (or are planning to buy) a heavy duty super blender. If this is the case, this is some exciting news.…
