Welcome to DAY 13 of our 15 Minute Prepping Projects series. Today we are going to rotate the food in our 72 hour kits. If you don’t have a kit put together yet, today is a good day to do it!
Every day for the month of September we will celebrate National Preparedness Month by undertaking a small task to help us get more prepared. Do as few or as many days as you want. Jump in at any time. Do them out of order, or more than one in a day. And feel free to share what you are doing!

72 hour kits are one of the first and most important things people start to work on when getting started with emergency preparedness. It’s great to have kits put together, but there are two main parts that need to be rotated periodically, particularly if you have young children. You’ll need to rotate through clothing that gets too small or for seasonal changes. You’ll also need to rotate your food and water! Today for our fifteen minute prep we are focusing just on the food part.
14 years ago I did a blog post talking about rotating the food in my 72 hour kits and I talked about how I didn’t even have a kit for my youngest daughter who was almost two. Crazy that that almost two year old is turning SIXTEEN this week! My kids have literally grown up on the blog for you all to see 🙂
There are LOTS of ways you can do 72 hour kit food, I’ve gone back and forth over the years with customizing my own kits, just buying 72 hour food bars, or having ready-made meals to eat. Whatever works for you and that you can keep up with on rotation is what you should do! So today I want you to pull out the food in your kits, see if anything is still good, and put new food into your kits.
Here are some resources to help if you need to create a kit or you want to try something new with your food:
- Milk Jug 72 Hour Kit (make sure to watch the outtakes video along with this one)
- 72 Hour Kits Revisited – Part 1
- 72 Hour Kits Revisited – Part 2
- Freeze-Dried Meals (perfect for kits)

Good luck with rotating your kits today. Make sure to share what your experiences are if you have any failures like I did in my post from years ago. Here are some ways you can share:
Instagram: Use #15minuteprep and tag @jodi_foodstoragemadeeasy on any post or story you do featuring your project. You can follow the hashtag to see everyone’s projects and if you tag me I will repost in my stories throughout the day (if your account is public).
Facebook: Comment on the PINNED posts in my Facebook Group (If you are not a member yet I will try to get you added within 24 hours so you can play along). The most recent day should show up at the top and you can scroll to the right to see past days. I will try to share some of these to Facebook stories as well (no names will be used, don’t worry!)
Text me: If you are not already signed up to get the daily challenges via text just text 15minuteprep to 717-788-3663. You can always reply to the daily text with your “report” so I can check in on you.
