Sunday Soup: Chicken Tortilla Soup

Bean Recipes, Recipes
You know the drill... You get home from church (or wherever you may be) STARVING, nothing really planned, and eating out isn't an option. Well this is what happened to me on Sunday. We changed times for church and you'd be surprised how much more hungry you are at 2:00 instead of noon. I needed a meal relatively quick that felt hearty, and since it's FREEZING here... Soup did the trick. Now if you follow our Facebook page, and saw me talking about chicken quinoa soup, that one I still need to make again and measure out the ingredients... This is a different one. I had some black beans that I had pressure cooked for another recipe I needed to use. If you don't know about pressure cooking beans- check…

Food Storage Enchilada Pie! FOR REAL!

Cooking From Scratch, Recipes
This is a recipe I have been making for a couple years. I first introduced you to it in a blog post with some fun challenges to help you use your food storage items more often. The post came with challenges such as cooking your dry beans instead of using canned, making bean flour cream of chicken instead of using canned, and making whole wheat tortillas from scratch. The challenges and post can be found here. Well, then I found a homemade enchilada sauce and posted about that here. Well last week I brought it to the NEXT FOOD STORAGE LEVEL! I tried it using freeze dried chicken and freeze dried cheese. I always justified the chicken and cheese in there by saying I keep a 3 month supply in…

Food Storage Recipes: Super Cherry Pie

Fruit Recipes, Recipes
My favorite desserts always revolve around cherries. Cherry cheesecake, cherry pie, cherry cobbler. Why does cherry pie filling have to be so delicious? My mom has the BEST cherry pie recipe ever but I always hate to make it because I don't typically keep sweetened condensed milk on hand (even though I SHOULD!) and it's kind of expensive too. So when I discovered you can make this magical ingredient using your food storage POWDERED MILK I was just thrilled and had to share my joy with you all. So thanks to my dear mother, here is a fantastic dessert you will have to try yourself! Super Cherry Pie Recipe Ingredients: 1/3 c. slivered almonds – press into pie shell before baking, then bake 1 c. Eagle brand sweetened condensed milk*…

Legume Recipes
If any of you have ever lived in one state, or country, then moved to another where your favorite restaurants, or foods were no longer you'll understand this post... (For example: anyone leave Utah and miss Cafe Rio?) Growing up as a kid in Canada I always ate "Habitant Pea Soup". It was warm and delicious on a cold winters day. When I moved to the States I could never find my favorite soup and lived for 10 years without it! While in a class about legumes I stumbled upon Rita Bingham's Country Beans book and found this recipe.

I was sneaky tonight!

Baking Ingredients, Comfort Food Ideas, Comfort Foods, General, Julie's Progress, Legumes, Long Term Food Storage, Powdered Milk Recipes
One of the things people always recommend when getting your family to start eating food storage is adding new foods to meals and not telling your family since they may not give it a fair chance.  Well my husband works from home and knows how and what I'm cooking so I haven't been able to use that trick. Tonight I hosted a little dinner party at my house and decided I would sneakily use tons of food storage in my dinner and dessert.  I definitely recommend it, it was fun having a little secret... hehe. Anyways,  I made a great tortilla casserole recipe, (added black beans) and even made the tortillas from scratch using all fresh ground whole wheat! I even replaced the cream of chicken soup with BEAN FLOUR…

Food Storage Recipes: Blender Wheat Pancakes

Powdered Eggs Recipes, Wheat, Wheat Recipes
When Julie and I first started our food storage adventures we thought that buying a wheat grinder was very scary and expensive. I started out by grinding a bit of wheat using my friend's WonderMill. But I really wanted to find other ways to use my wheat that didn't involve grinding. So when I first saw Crystal's amazing and gorgeous 4th of July pancakes made with wheat in a blender I was so excited to try it out. These Blender Wheat Pancakes are still a staple meal in my home even though I do in fact have a wheat grinder now. My kids LOVE it when I make pancakes ... especially for dinner! The other night we were having so much fun I snapped a few pics for you to…
